My 70 yr old mom is struggling with MDS at present and continues to have infection after infection. Started with a HUGE growth in her neck, then her face swelled up. Got that under control, now her hand/wrist/fingers are super swollen. She’s in the ER again and docs think it might be gout? They’re going to to cut into her hand to determine what’s going on. It started in her hand and is spreading into her wrist. Has anyone with MDS experienced anything like this? I’m so glad I found this message board – hoping to share and learn good, useful info and best practices. My head and heart are will all of you who are caring for your loved ones with MDS.

Thank you for your email with information regarding your mother’s health. I know this is a difficult situation for you and I would recommend that you take her to one of our Centers of Excellence in MDS for a second opinion. She should be very carefully assessed before undergoing any treatment. Benefits versus risk analysis should be done with any treatment. Following is a link to our Centers of Excellence worldwide https://www.mds-foundation.org/mds-centeres-of-excellence/.
