    My 80 year father has MDS and gets his blood checked every other week. If under 10 1/2 has to get a shot. How can we bring the red cell count up and stay up to avoid these expense shots. He also only has 20% lung capacity so can barely breathe.

    U am sorry to hear of your father’s condition. What kind of injection does your father receive to increase what seems to be his hemoglobin?

    The medicine is Aeranesp. Is there something easier on him that he can do naturally? What about the EPO procedure I just read that some hospitals are doing for surgeries in order to avoid transfusions?

    Eating the right foods can help increase the number of red blood cells in your body. Here are a few of the ways you can eat your way to better blood cell health:

    Iron. Food rich in iron can help your body rebuild what it has lost. Lentils and legumes are a great way to get the iron you need and they are healthy for you in many other ways, too.
