Hi – my Dad has Alzheimer’s Disease and has now been diagnosed with MDS. Are there other families dealing with this same combination? I’d love to hear from anyone who has had to help an MDS patient who also has dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease understand what is happening. In our case, my dad is sort of in the middle stages of Alzheimer’s – he’s still quite cognizant, but doesn’t always understand the connections between things. His current treatment plan has been Vidaza (he’s just about to start his 3rd round of 7 injections, then 21 days off), and is having transfusions every 2 weeks (occasionally gets 3 weeks between transfusions). Any advice, or insight would be helpful. Thank you!

I know this is a difficult situation for you and I would recommend that you take him to one of our Centers of Excellence in MDS for a second opinion. I think this is especially important taking into consideration that he also has Alzheimer’s Disease. I also strongly encourage you to talk with his health care professional, if you have not done so already, about his specific medical condition and treatments.

Following is a link to our Centers of Excellence worldwide https://www.mds-foundation.org/mds-centeres-of-excellence/. We also have a wonderful information program called the Building Blocks of Hope which we can send you via postal mail. If this is something that you would be interested in, please forward your mailing address to patientliaison@mds-foundation.org. Segmentation of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles is crucial to pathological analysis of Alzheimer’s disease. And human genome research is casting new light on Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, some chemical mechanism like sodium phosphite can also show a difference.
