I wrote this for my dad’s 73rd birthday, 26 days before he passed away. A family member surprised me reading this at my dad’s funeral (per his request). Thought I’d share…..
A Father’s Legacy
A Father said to his daughter one day….
I want to leave a legacy child
What will they think?
What will they say?
How will they remember me when they pray?
And this is what she had to say….
Eyes as clear and blue as the rolling sea
Always a story to be told
And a vision to behold.
A smile as broad and radiant as the rising sun
Rejoicing in great moments and small
Warm, inviting, welcoming to all.
Hands as strong as steel
And yet as soft as well worn leather
From years of carving out a life
For his children and his beautiful wife.
His heart reaching for the heights
Worn and scarred a bit from the pain
Yet strong and enduring like the majestic oak
Nurtured by the rain.
A soul passionate and true
Never forsaking what he believed in
Teaching his children to honor God and all men.
Gentle, kind, faithful, and sound
Not a day passed by without giving thanks
For the blessings he’d found.
The Almighty gave us a great gift
In this man, husband, father, and friend
He continued to give of himself to the end.
Yes….they’ll nod their heads and agree
He lived his life well as the man called him to be
This was a man with a mighty legacy.
