Hi..I was scheduled to have a cord blood tranplant this Thursday. The doctor just called with bad news. Apparently my blasts are too high and they cannot do it. They want me in there tomorrow to discuss the game plan but cannot tell me anymore over the phone. I am so frightened. They could not tell me the game plans or anything else. I am afraid they cannot do anything for me and this is it for me? I just need any advice anyone can give me right now.
April 11, 2005 at 11:08 pm #5424TerriMembersorry to hear the news, Did they tell you how high your blast are and how do they know did they do a Bmb
I hope your visit goes well,April 11, 2005 at 11:15 pm #5425doreenMemberThey did not say but they did say that they were more than 5 Percent which is not acceptable for a cord blood. I am just at a loss right now.
April 12, 2005 at 12:15 am #5426TerriMemberDoreen, 5% in the marrow is not that High, But I guess for the transplant it is. My husbands was 1% before he started this round of the vidaza back in November. We are hoping they do another BMB on his next visit this month to see if they are under control. Our Dr is happy if the Blast get to 5 or under. They do not feel Bob is a candidate for any type of transplants.
I hope your visit with the doctor will put your mind at ease.April 12, 2005 at 1:08 am #5427SuzanneMemberDoreen, don’t panic.Get some sleep tonight and take someone with you tomorrow to listen to what they have to say with a different set of ears. Wait and see what they say. They always offered me several alternatives-some very experimental and one of which was always just supportive care. maybe they will have a way to get those blasts down -ie with a chemo treatment- so that you can then have the transplant. I don’t know anything about a cord transplant but for a bone marrow or stem cell transplant I believer some chemo is required to kill the bad cells before they introduce the new transplant cells. We will hope there are some answers for you tomorrow!
April 12, 2005 at 1:16 am #5428sarahMemberDoreen, good advice from Suzanne. Hope things are a little clearer after meeting with Dr tomorrow. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. You hang in there and try to get some rest tonight.

April 12, 2005 at 8:02 pm #5433doreenMemberWell here is the news.. My blast were at 6 and they cannot do a cordblood unless they are at less than 5 or they feel that you will relapse. Soo…..I need to come back to my primary care doctor here in Rochester to get some good chemo treatments to get me in remission. Not good news but not bad. I will just need to get this nasty mds in remission before I can go ahead with this. What does not kill you makes you stronger I keep saying. I will get through this one way or another. Thanks again for all your support. Love you all… Doreen
April 12, 2005 at 9:38 pm #5434SuzanneMemberDoreen, chemo was not a “bowl of cherries” but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Most transplants are not a simple thing to go through so I am glad they are being careful that if you have one you will be in the best condition they can put you in to have the best chance that it will give you a cure! Go for it!
