first i felt concerned, but now i am starting to feel panic

dad’s wbc has risen in the last 3 weeks from a normal 6.3 to 14.2

he had a bmb on 11/30/04 that showed 3% blasts
now his peripheral blood is showing 5% blasts
    his neutophils are high
    his lympocytes are low
and his NRBC (haven’t a clue what that is) are extremely high (normal is 0 his are 29)

we see the local hemodoc on friday and the treatment doctor next week

was wondering is anyone could shed some light on what might be going on here

    thanks

Haven’t a clue just a bit of support from this corner. I’m glad you will see the dr. this week perhaps they can offer an explanation. On the surface I know it doesn’t sound very good but with him on the Vidaza perhaps it could be the reason. We will hope that is the case. I also wonder what the RNBC is??? Barbra

Eve, When Bob finished his first round of Vidaza last April his blast were normal and His wbc finally were norm. He went seven months without vidza and in November his Whites were elevated (gradully over a few weeks) when we saw the doc they were up to 20. He saw abnormal cells in the blood smear and decided to do the bmb which showed the 14%. His whites are now coming down again on the Vidaza so doc is feeling it is working again.
Your Dad has been on the vidaza continuously correct??
Bob Neutriphils during the 7 months were doing good, which doctor thought maybe the marrow was starting to produce good cells.

Is your dad fighting off a flu bug or something.

I hope that your next appointment shows improvement.
Bob has been on Levaquin through all of his treatment with Vidaza and again we have him on so many supplements I think that has been such a help.

Every one reacts so differently to the treatments and the disease it is so hard.

Continued prayers. Please keep us posted.

Eve, Hope your dad is getting Better. Not sure of the Toxic grn. Does the doctor take calls to answer your questions, Our Local Hemotologist is great as far as that I usually get an answer shortly after my phone in.
    Continued prayers

Eve we got the toxic gran business both on the bmb as well as the cbc while on the Zarnestra trials. It went on to say it was a reaction similiar to a poisonous substance. The Dr. told us it was from the Zarnestra which was in fact poison. They stopped the meds for 30 days and the toxic notes went away. I wonder if it is a case of too much of the chemo. med???? This caused us a great deal of concern and never did get a really good answer. I know they have to pull them off the meds when toxcitity occurs. Whether this qualifies or not I am not sure. After he went back on the meds they lowered the dosage and so far no reoccurance go for another cbc tomorrow.

    hi barbra

thanks for that info – that is exactly what i was thinking about the toxic gran – also speculating that the rise in wbc might be the body fighting the poison

we have an appointment with the local hemodoc tomorrow and another cbc

i am just keeping my fingers crossed that it is not the disease progressing

terri – thanks for you prayers

thanks to the whole forum – it is good to know that we can learn so much by sharing our experiences

    hi all

just got back from the local hemodoc with dad – bottom line is – there is no need to panic – doctor is not terribly concerned about the elevated white count – dad’s spleen is larger than it was last month, but still no need for alarm – and as far as the toxic gran notation on the cbc – he told me to ignore it

so for the time being i am a little more relaxed

dad will see the mds specialist next week and see what he has to say

Eve, Glad that the doc was able to answer your concerns and let you relax a little. This disease is so scary, so many ups and downs.
Keep us posted on how he is doing. Hope his counts get back to a normal flow.

Eve. Raeb in Nov with 14% blasts…wbc slowly went up and jumped from 9 to 17 in one week. Did peripheral smear and it showed blasts…doc said when blasts show up in peripheral that shows you have transferred into AML. Am still in hospital finishing my first “round” of chemo….had bone marrow before starting chemo and showed 26% blasts….Will get out tomorrow if no fever. Hope to be in remission as I wait for stem cell transplant.

    hi pam

dad had high peripheral blasts in the blood when he was hospitalized in november – they did a bmb and it only showed 3% blasts in the marrow – the hemodoc said that the virus or infection he had caused the blasts to appear in the peripheral blood and that it was the bmb that was the true marker of disease progression

we are going to keep a close eye on both his wbc and peripheral blasts and if need be dad will have to have another bmb – hope it doesn’t come to that

hope all goes well for you

    eve
