Several years ago my husband who frequently donated blood to the Red Cross was told he had anemia and advised to take iron supplements. A while later he was diagnosed with hemochromatosis although he had only one gene for it.
He began a regime of bloodletting. But the anemia persisted.
He was then diagnosed with myelodysplasia and began a regime of self-administered procrit shots. His anemia was ameliorated and his iron counts began to normalize.
He has since been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Most recently he was diagnosed with osteoporosis. He recently received his 3rd yearly infusion for that. His endocrinologist says his bone density has improved.
He recently suffered for two weeks with coughing spells at night that kept him awake. An infection was diagnosed and treated with amoxillin. Almost immediately after the coughing subsided he began to suffer from excruciating back pain which barely responds to prescribed pain medications.
He appears weakened and has lost his color. I am concerned that all these health problems are interrelated and that his MDS is worsening. He is under VA care for the blood disorder and under the care of 2 specialists and a generalist.
