My dad was recently “diagnosed” with MDS from his hematologist after a “MDS-specific CBC panel”. Because his platelets are still above 80,000, the doctor has decided to wait to do a bone marrow biopsy until his counts near 50,000 or he has more symptoms. Is this a frequent practice? Everything I have read from the info received from you says he shouldn’t be diagnosed until he has the biopsy. Thanks for any information or referring me to the correct source.

Dear Cindy, Thank you for your email with information regarding your father’s health. I would recommend that you take him for a second opinion at one of our Centers of Excellence in MDS. Benefits versus risk analysis should be done with any treatment. Following is a link to our Centers of Excellence worldwide https://www.mds-foundation.org/mds-centeres-of-excellence/. I hope this information helps.
