    Hi All.

If ever someone doubts the power of prayer, tell them this story:

My Dad had a multitude of blood tests done on Wednesday by a new Internist/Endocrinologist. He is very concerned about Dad’s kidneys in combination with the CMML. I waited by the phone all day Thursday and Friday to hear from Dr. Last night (Friday) he phoned at 8 pm…”Take your Dad to your local hospital NOW !!! I will phone ahead and let them to know you are on the way. Do not delay. He has very little time left to start treatment.” We scrambled and got him over there. After THREE hours of waiting I finally fussed with the nurses to find the Emerg doctor who Dr. Purdon had phoned. They went around and reluctantly asked all of the Emergency doctors and all of them said that nobody had phoned. I was beginning to get really angry with all of them. Dad was disintegrating in his bed and all the head nurse had to say was…”We get 50 calls a day from Specialists out of town who send their patients here and expect that we will put them on the top of the chart. Well, that’s too damned bad. Your Dad presented as an unwell man and he can just wait in line like everyone else does.” Another nurse heard this and when the first nurse was gone, she told me that Dad is probably in the wrong hospital and we better find the correct hospital. They WOULD NOT make the phone calls for me even though 4 of them were sitting at the desk eating lollipops and gossiping about a nurse who was not present. I spent an hour at the desk phoning every hospital in our area looking for a doctor who may have heard from Dr. Purdon regarding my Dad. At least they were kind enough to look up the phone numbers for me. Finally, I phoned the hospital where Dr. Purdon works out of. I got a hold of the Dialysis People….NOPE. I phoned again and got a very kind lady in Emergency. I told her the whole story inbetween gasping for air because I was in the middle of an Asthma attack. (Did the 4 nurses behind the desk help me…No…they thought I sounded funny.) She told me to phone her back in 10 minutes. She would call the Internist who was on call for our doctor and she would try to find out where Dad should go. 10 minutes later I phoned her back. She told me that they actually got Dr. Purdon who happened by chance to be in the hospital. While she was talking to me, he was standing next to her at the counter and was talking on another phone to the Emergency Doctor at the hospital that I was standing in. I got the distinct impression that he wasn’t very happy. I hung up the phone and went into Emergency only to see a doctor on the phone. I was as mad as hell. That woman had walked by Dad’s bed at least a dozen times over the past few hours and had ignored him. She didn’t even tell the nurses that he was supposed to be looked at immediately. Well….when she hung up the phone you should have seen that staff move!!! Angiogram….blood tests…attention….Erich, would you like a warm blanket? Is that more comfortable Erich? Are you thirsty Erich? Is there anything we can do for you Erich? Does it hurt anywhere Erich? Can we help you to the bathroom Erich? It was pitiful. Anyhow, about 1 1/2 hours later, in came the Doctor armed with her test results. DAD’S RESULTS HAD ALL DROPPED INTO THE NORMAL ZONE. See, Dr. Purdon’s test results had Dad’s Creatinine up at almost 600 and his Potassium was at 6 which means Dialysis NOW. Emergency’s tests put Dad’s Creatinine still extrememly high but the Potassium was only 5.1. They sent him home after midnight. Anyhow…the Emergency Doctor handed me the test results and said, “Here you can do whatever you like with these. I would suggest that on Monday you call Dr. Purdon and if he wants a copy, you can FAX them to him. You can also send a copy to his Family Doctor, his Oncologist, and the Urologist in Guelph.” I said, “Aren’t YOU supposed to forward test results?” Her reply was, “Well, I will send them to the Family Dr. and the Oncologist because they are here in town but you can do the rest yourself.” hehehehe…I think Dr. Purdon gave her ‘what for’ on the phone the SECOND time they spoke and she was going to punish him by not sending the test results. I don’t know but that is what it seems like.
So I took Dad and Mom home and now I will wait till Monday to phone Dr. Purdon’s office, ask him if he wants the results from Dad’s Friday night emergency and then I will get to hear first hand what he sounds like when he goes up in smoke. He is VERY professional. These people in our Emerg Dept. are NOT.

My point is, this doctor last night could not for the life of her figure out how Dad’s tests became so Normal in only 2 days when Dr. Purdon’s tests from Wednesday were such a mess. She said that Dr. Purdon sent her a copy of Dad’s results which were extremely worrisome and somehow, something brought the values back down. I call it prayer from many people.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I pray for all the rest of you too.

    Caroline
