Well, we spent the day at PMH, and came away with a dx of AML. The CMML has transformed very rapidly. All the paperwork has been done, blood tests and another BMB, and Hans is being admitted on Monday morning, to start chemo.
Everyone there was wonderful and kind. And, you know, unfortunately, we weren’t alone. Four other patients at this BMT clinic were diagnosed as acute, also. Isn’t that just terribly sad and outrageous?

The doctor has now put Hans on 6000 mg/day of Hydroxyurea, and also some other pill (sorry, haven’t absorbed that name) to carry him over till Monday. The good news is his WBC count has actually gone down from 192,000 to 174,000 in the past week from the then increased dose of Hydrea, and his other counts are still okay — and the doc said he is still in pretty good shape. Once he is in remission we can think about a transplant, although the typing is going to start next week with Hans & his 2 brothers, and possibly our daughter if they don’t match.
After that, finding a non-related donor.

We’ve done some crying, wiped our tears and are
girding our loins for the fight.

    hugs,
    Esme

Thanks Sarah and Lisa, for your prayers & thoughts. I told Hans last night to keep imagining those bad cells disintergrating, and he smiled and said that’s just what he’s been doing.

    Esme,

My mom went thru induction treatment last year at 72 and went into remission. She was diagnosed with AML with white blood count of 200.. It was such a shock and I was very frightened at first. She was weak after the treatment but recovered quickly.. Please let me know if you have any questions. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Hans.. Pat

FRUSTRATING DAY. After getting blood drawn this morning at the hospital, we sat for over 4 hours till seeing the acute leuk. specialist. He couldn’t admit Hans, as there are no beds. Good old Canadian heath system for ya…The only good news is that his WBC went down from 170 last Friday to 70 today, because he’s been on 6000 mg/day of Hydrea for the last 3 days. The other counts are still acceptable. So, back we go Thursday for more blood tests, a heart function test needed prior to induction chemo, and hope that they can admit him. In the meantime if we have ANY question, no matter how small, we are to call. Poor Hans is really angry. He has twice had to gear himself up, and twice been sent home.

Alice, I don’t know what kind of AML he has. He had CMML until recently when it transformed to AML. Does anyone know, if with chemo he goes into
remission, is he then considered to have gone back to having CMML???

    Thanks for all the prayers!
    Esme
