Tah,
Sorry, I guess I’m a little slow. I did a little research on the Donner party though and now I get it-you are very clever.
I didn’t realize Carl Sagan had anything to do with the Twilight Zone I had only heard Rod Serling.
On that note I’m going to let you guys go back to your banter. Thanks for keeping things interesting.
Kathy
February 23, 2005 at 10:04 pm #4136tahoedonnerMemberI’m confusing science with science fiction. It was Rod Sterling. Sagan did have MDS and gaind some awareness of it when he died.
February 24, 2005 at 3:40 am #4137John in GRMemberHow would I know?? We’ve only had TV’s in GR for the past ten years. We get all of our info in GR from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. Since the vast majority of us conservatives can’t read, and are so myopic we can’t see more than 5-6 feet, we depend on the radio. Of course it took us until 1960 to learn how to turn them on. Actually, that’s not too bad since we didn’t have electricity until 1955 in GR.
Hmmmm. On the board that appointed Barbara Boxer. Was it before or after that that you had to escape to the mountains????
Did you get run out of town on a rail for making bad appointments???
C’mon Tah. Confession is good for the soul.

I checked out “Hallelujah Acres” as you suggested….it’s a Bible based nutrition store! Their “Greenstar Juicer” runs in at about $400. I just read in today’s obits that the Rev. Gene Scott, the cigar chomping late night televangelist, just died.Hallelujah & Greenstar sound like something he might have promoted.
Just to show you that I am open minded about health food, I’ll share with you an old family recipe for a health drink that I often make in our good old $29 Waring Blender ….. put into the blender two parts of that great Mexican pharmaceutical company Sausa’s extract of agave, one part of that grand old European citrus extract Triple-sec,one part Rose’s lime juice, two parts sweetened lemon mix and six ice cubes…. blend until the ice is crushed ….pour into a frosted glass rimmed with salt and garnished with a lime wedge…enjoy….if you want to add a bit of fiber (always a good idea) have a bowl of mashed avocado mixed with salsa and some tortilla chips with it! It might not cure MDS but it’s sure a lot more enjoyable than Vidaza!
E Clampus Vitus had a very strong presence in Truckee but they stopped all that free ride out of town stuff long, long ago! I’m still on that same board that appointed Barbara Boxer but remember that Barbara is actually from back East of Nevada. Only a true New Yorker, which she is, could talk and act the way she does. Before any New Yorkers get upset, note that I didn’t say that’s bad.
Please stop saying that California is such a great place. People really shouldn’t move here. Consider all of our floods, fires, locusts and earthquakes and the fact that our Governator doesn’t even speak English (which is probably why he went over so well at the Republican convention).
Keep warm and stay well!
February 27, 2005 at 6:10 am #4139John in GRMemberDear Tah,
Like so many things, skepticism can be good and bad. It is good when it causes us to reject falsity. It is bad when it causes us to reject the truth. We can be hurt by believing in things that are not true. We can be hurt even more severely by refusing to believe the truth.
And so it is wisdom, discernment and a thirst for the truth that we all must seek above all else, whether the subject is politics, religion, family, or MDS.
laters, my friend,

I read your reply…I hope that you tried a few of my old family recipies before you wrote it! Great!Today I attended a memorial celebration for a great friend and fellow Board member from the same Board from which we did appointed Barbara Boxer to her start in politics. We had served together for well over forty years. Over a thousand folks and probably the most well racially integrated group of folks ever in our county came out in spite of the bad weather.
One of us is white and the other black. We each each maried someone of the other color (well,it depends upon how you consider Lithuanians).
He died of pulmoniary fibrosis after 17 days in ICU….not at all anticipated.
When I got my six months to a year projection, I assumed that he would attend my funeral. I am still in good health. Our shared MD was in attendance….I might outlive him….you never know!
My point is that it is not how you die that is important….it is how you live!
Do enjoy each moment …. and do try our old family recipe!
Keep warm and stay well!
I look forward to when I can say, “Kep cool and stay well!”
March 1, 2005 at 2:52 am #4141John in GRMemberOkay, I’ll bite.
I have no idea what “old family recipe” is all about. Will you enlighten???? I do agree that how one lives is most important.
I also agree that racial barriers should come down. As a matter of fact, my wife is Korean. Her connections to some asian natural health stuff has been a great help in fighted this MDS thing. I feel enriched by being able to participate in two cultures.
So you’re Lithuanian w a black wife and used to be on a board that first appointed Barbara Boxer. Hmmmm.

The “old family recipe” is just above in a previous entry…try it, you’ll like it! It’s called a “Margarita” in some places!
No , no , no….the other guy was a Lithuanian with black wife….or was it a black Lithuanian with a white wife….or a white Lithuanian without a wife….it really does not matter…he was a really great guy and we miss him very much!!!!
I spent a year or so in Pusan, Korea in the 1950’s as a Stevedore Officer in the US Army….nice folks….good memories! I delight now in chatting with friends at the super market and slipping a jar of kimchee into their carts and then watching them at the checkout stand. Sorry, it’s just my warped sense of humor.
We recently heard that Barbara Boxer is moving to Oakland, Ca. Someone’s loss and someone’s gain, no doubt! At least it’s closer to you!
Best wishes!
March 2, 2005 at 3:27 am #4143John in GRMemberTah,
You are one crazy septuagenarian. Your family has waited a very long time for you to grow up. Do you think it will ever occur??
I was stationed in Inchon, Korea during the Vietnam era. I was a US Navy officer working for Military Sealift Command. Essentially, we were acting as shipping agents for civilian ships carrying military cargo. That’s where Cheri and I met.
Anyway, I’m getting a little nervous. Since we both were in Korea working in shipping as military officers, do you think people will think we’re brothers???
BTW, kimchee is loaded with enzymes and is very healthful. I eat it regularly.

March 7, 2005 at 12:20 am #4144gemloyearMemberHi you guys whats the matter did you run out of steam or B.S.??? I really enjoyed your bantering, we all need a few laughs and crazyness. By the way that kimchee is great stuff, it’ll make you go places and do things, you should try it Tah it will help with the B,S.An Admirer
March 7, 2005 at 12:48 am #4145tahoedonnerMemberToo busy out and about enjoying our 72 degree weather to check the computer! The snow level is down to about 8′ in our front yard and we can almost see out the windows! It goes fast but we haven’t brought out the kayaks yet.
Kimchee is great stuff. It’s great diet food. After eating it, you don’t feel like eating anything else for a week or so!
John should try it with the margarita recipe I posted. Guacamole is more traditional but he just might start a trend and if it helps his MDS we could be a real challenge to Pharmion!
March 8, 2005 at 2:57 am #4146John in GRMemberHey that’s a great idea. I could trade my MDS for liver disease.
Tah, I’m becoming a bit concerned about you. Do you think there is a chance the thin air of Truckee might be having an adverse effect on you??
BTW Tah, my family has been waiting a long time for me to grow up. May it never completely happen.
John
March 8, 2005 at 6:08 am #4147tahoedonnerMemberJohn….
You came up to ski in our Truckee area at Squaw, Heavenly and Alpine at the wrong time! You were up here during our modest (pun intended) but ever so brief “dress for the cold” season.
We are now well into our Spring “bikini skiing season”! With a huge base of 15′ or so, great powder, and temperatures well into the sixties and low seventies, the sights are just unimaginable ….and I don’t mean merely our great mountains, rivers and lakes.
If you were to come up now. I would be more concerned for your heart than your liver!
We really feel for you folks way back “east of Nevada” in “somewhat” Grand Rapids (have you seen Yosemite Falls? and Cape Cod Fish (which is really an island since the canal cuts it off from the mainland). When one is geographically challenged, I guess it’s OK to indulge in a bit of hyperbole!
My counts are still dropping and I see my MD on the 16th. He will push for restarting Vidaza at a lower dose but I think I’ll stick with the Margaritas since I do believe that MDS will do me in well before my liver gives out….what the Hell….I might even start smoking my pipe again!
Best to you and please resist the pressures to grow up!!!
March 10, 2005 at 4:57 am #4148John in GRMemberSorry about your counts, Tah. BTW have you read Michael Savage’s new book “Liberalism is a mental disorder” ???
Hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather.
Even most conventional doctors encourage increased consumption of raw fruits and veggies.
Whadduya have to lose, Tah?John
March 10, 2005 at 7:18 am #4149tahoedonnerMemberSomeone told me that Michael Savage is a mental disorder.
Tomorrow, my wife and I must pull ourselves away from our sunny sierra slopes and bikini vistas to go down to the Monterrey/Carmel area for a conference. The weather should be in the mid seventies and in spite of all the great restaurants, crashing waves and other distractions, I will attend all sessions.
We pass right through Castroville, “The Artichoke Capital of the World” so we will take your advice and indulge….but I bet that not even a true Vegan like you could eat an uncooked artichoke!
We like them cooked, dechoked, splayed open, stuffed with local bay shrimp and served with a good Gilroy aioli sauce, local sourdough French bread and a good Central Coast Fume Blanc.
We will be thinking of you!
Thanks for your concerns re my numbers. I responded to another posting and gave a WEB site that I found helpfull. Check it out….
