Thank you so much for posting. I am so glad he is doing okay so far. I pray he continues to do well. My dad was given the same odds but his doc said not to do it. He did not think he would make it. So Dad is just doing transfusions. It seems now he is having reds every 3 days too. With the platelets.

I will keep you and mike in my thoughts.

Also sounds like Sweets Syndrome. My dad had this, took a week to diagnose. It is a secondary issue that you can get with MDS. It is treated with prednisone. My dad also got it after using nuepogen. His doc discontinued use after the outbreak of sweets.

Welcome Jeanette – sorry you have this issue too. My dad has the opposite of your hubby, MDS 1st now AML. It is a tough road. I can only wish you godspeed and hugs across the miles. This is hard stuff to deal with it. The only advice I have is take it one day at a time.

I am confused too! So many posts say that once you get AML the docs want to do the SCT or you have many other alternatives, but teh docs here have told my Dad that there is nothing left to do for him. I just do not understand. I try to have faith that if there was something the Hutch would have tried it.

Thank you Gloria for your response. Dad can’t do the chemo – he has underlying health issues that the docs say would nothelp him with chemo. They have told him there is nothing more to do than supportive care. It is strange that he could do a mini transplant and maybe make it but not induction chemo. I don’t know. Hopefully Loretta will be able to do chemo and now Mike too.

Engel – how long after he was diagnosed with AML did he pass? Did he try any chemo? My dad was just diagnosed to AML. They said a year. That seemed really optimistic?? He is not eligible for chemo, they said he would not make it through.

Loretta – I am so sorry for you. I hope you health is good enough to do the induction. This disease is horrible.

Thanks Patti. He has platelets every few days, reds once a week. I was thinking Arizona because we have family there and the Mayo clinic is right down the road. Maybe we could they would have some more options for him??? smile I am grasping at straws at this point!

You know what we learned at the Hutch – they don’t recommend the mask, they say it does very little to deter bugs. They say just wash hands, wash, wash! So he actually went out for dinner while he was there. Here he did not like to because he was embarassed about the mask! So every place has different rules! His doc here says wear it!

Thanks for you reply. I appreciate any info.

The Hutch is currently doing a research study on this. They get 2 draws of the Stem Cells from the donor to use a 2nd time if needed.

Chuck – my dad did vidaza, a few doses, it worked in the begining, he tolerated it pretty well but then he got Sweets in April and his blasts went way back up. His doc feels that the nueprogen was to blame for bringing on the sweets and to this day will not give him anything to try to raise his whites.

I think everyone is different and the whole chromosome isuue complicates it more. Good luck to you. I hope it works for you, you seem to be in good shape, I really think that helps. My dad has always has a lot of health problems. I am gonna get him on that pineapple though! Thanks for the help.

Hey Chuck – I have been wondering about the pineapple thing for awhile. How does it help and how can I convince my dad to eat it?? LOL. He is being transfused every 3 days for platelets.

Thanks for any help. Have fun skiing.

YOu can also make your own. If you sew, you can sew a rectangle, fill it with popcorn and herbal stuff id you like, I like lavendar and then stitch it up. I have a few squares I ues for my knees and hands, but I like my warp around neck on with handles.
