    Hi Elle,

I’m glad your husband has improved since the stroke. My mother is the same way about not wanting to go to the Dr. or hospital. I think she will be better in the future. Just the last few years, my mother has developed blood clots in her legs before her platelets were low. She was receiving lovenex shots but they were discontinued once her platelets went below 60. It’s good your husband is on the blood thinners. My mother had a greenfield filter placed in her vein to prevent clots from moving from her leg to her lung. She had a blood clot in her leg and normal platelet levels at the time, but she receiving chemo which made her platelets bounce around. She hasn’t had any problems with the filter and it was a simple procedure. Thanks so much for your help. Pauline

    Hi Neil,

Thank you for the information. I will make sure she sees an opthamologist. My mom’s wbc ranges between 1.8 and 2.2.. Pauline

    Hi Elle,

I’m glad they were able to correct the obstruction in your carotid artery. Did the black spot go away? I guess these warnings are actually a blessing. How is you husband? Did he have many symptoms when he had the stroke? Is there anything they can do when there is bleeding? Thank you so much for the information. Next time, my mother has similar problem, I will carry her to the hospital. Pauline

    Hi Neil,

Thank you for your post it is wonderful information. You mentioned some patients can get by with low platelets for years as long as there are no symptoms. Some can get by at 10,000 without significant problems while others have difficulty at 75,000.

My mother’s only symptoms are reddish spots on her arms. At times, they can be pretty big but she has never bled from her gums or nose. My mother also hit 3 once and they ran with her chart to order platelets. What is your wbc?

Our Dr. never mentioned anything about flashing lights in the corner of the eye. Does that indicate bleeding? I thought my mom was fairly safe having platelet count around 37 but I guess not. Pauline

    Hi Laura,

Thank you for the information. My mother had really low platelets for a few months last year which required transfusions. The only symptom she had was red spots on her arms and occasionally on her chest. Her platelet counts were 7 and 8 when she was receiving transfusions. She never bled from her nose or gums. I guess now that she’s been in the high 30’s and her red spots are very small, I didn’t think of internal bleeding. Her Dr. ordered carotid artery ultrasound and echocardiogram. Do you know if the neurologist would be able to order testes to determine if there was bleeding in the brain? Will they be able to detect bleeding with a cat scan? Thank you. Pauline
