my dad saw dr. raza in 2002…tried to get into a trial but developed leukemia.
Dr. Raza’s husband was some dept. head at Rush Cancer ctr. but passed away from leukemia or lymphoma in 2003 I think. She moved shortly after that to Boston.
She is a very good dr. and usually has good staff surrounding her.
bperMemberAlex,
sorry to hear about your Mom. I lost my Dad when I was 38. It wasn’t recently… it was about 5 years ago, but I remember everything like it was yesterday. He wasn’t sick for long, 6 months maybe …and then he was gone.
Right after he died, I immediately signed up for Team in Training and raised a ton of money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society…I am sure that the MDS Foundation is in need of money for research as well. I found this was a great way to get my frustrations out and try to do some good at the same time.
Hopefully a cure will be found for this disease one day. The sooner the better.

bperMemberMy Dad passed away in 2002 but he saw Dr. Schiffer @ Karmanos and they are very good. They are agressive in treatment. He was recommending a transplant because he thought my Dad would have AML soon and he was right.
Unfortunately my Dad went with another Cancer Center because it was “in network”. The approach was not as aggressive. In fact, they were playing it up with “Why are you here, you still have MDS”.
I wish he would have stuck with Schiffer, although the outcome would have maybe been the same.
bperMemberHi Barbra,
My thoughts are with you.
My Mom did those Hospice workshops and it seemed to help. For me, I trained for a marathon and raised funds to find a cure for this awful disease. Kinda a win-win situation…I took my frustations out running and got in shape, and I gave a whole bunch of $ for leukemia research.

bperMemberApril,
I am not sure about the claw, but I do know there are signs to look for. When my Dad passed away I wasn’t sure what to look for. It was after he died that I googled for some info because the last night really frightened me. Here is a link to a hospice site, http://www.hospicepatients.org/hospic60.html
..My Dad had the strange breathing pattern a week before he passed away. He had swelling etc too.My thoughts are with you.

bperMemberIf she has info of that nature, I would like to find out more. I find it rather strange that my Dad had MDS/AML and his mother had leukemia in the late 50’s (uncertain what type).
bperMemberBarbra,
You and Ron are in my thoughts.
My Dad used a mouthwash that was prescribed, and ky jelly (that was recommended) was used for his nose.
My parents’ also utilized a travelling nurse. It wasn’t hospice but she became a great advocate and she greatly helped my Mom by coming to the house every other day.
