When my wife had her transplant, I was there for the actual procedure. The procedure is nothing more than a transfusion but it was a bit emotional for her.
I would usually work days and be there after work each night. I slept there some of the weekends, depending on how she was doing. The staff is amazing at Roswell and the times I couldn’t be there, they took really good care of her.
I think you do have to just play it by ear. If it is a bad day, be there if you can. There are always good days and bad days, you just have to keep both your spirits up and get through it together.
I got to the point where I stopped worrying about myself and got sick. You can’t take care of the patient if you are sick so make sure to take care of yourself as well.
Good luck with everything. I wish you the best!

ButchLParticipantYes, my wife’s port was the source of a couple of infections as well.
ButchLParticipantCarrie:
So sorry to hear. If there is anything at all I can do, don’t hesitate. I mean it. You are all in my prayers.
Butch
ButchLParticipantI just met Carrie at the hospital. She is a sweetheart.
Carrie…Anything you need, just call. It was a pleasure to meet you!
ButchLParticipantSo sorry to hear….My thoughts and prayers are with Greg, you and your families.
I am glad she was comfortable.
God bless…..
Butch
ButchLParticipantI think they worried about it under 20 for my wife and transfused at 10.
ButchLParticipantGreg:
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My wife also lost the battle to GVHD. Enjoy every day with her and be with her as much as you can.

ButchLParticipantThe kids are doing fine. They are moving out next week to go back to their Dad. That’ll be the next hurdle for me. They will still be close by so we plan on still doing things together.
It’s been a struggle, but I am getting back to my life.
I try and keep from posting here because the outcome for me was not good and I like to only post positive things when I can. I do read the posts here several times a day. Sometimes it is so hard though because I kind of re-live what we went through.
It’ll take time but we will survive.
Be strong, never surrender………..
ButchLParticipantI would think the itching after a BMT is graft v. host disease. It is expected and treatable. The donor cells attack the recipient’s suppressed cells and take up residence. They counteract the GVH with meds. The creams do do a great job for the rash/pealing and itching as well. I know with my wife, they kept asking her if she had any rash or itching. They were waiting for it to happen.
ButchLParticipantCarrie:
I know Dr. Wang and she was the same with my wife. At first, all business. It did take her a while to warm up. I am sure there is nothing to read into it.
Take care,
