My mother’s MDS progressed to AML and she was in Vanderbilt for her initial phase of treatment with oral Ventoclax and Cytarabine subq for the 5 days she was there and discharged her without any Cytarabine at home.
Was she supposed to continue that? In the MD office just before admission they told me she would go home with injections and they would send a needle box home to dispose of the needles and bring it back and they would dispose of the biohazard box, they also said it would be filled there at Vanderbilt because it wasn’t readily available. So I am confused and didn’t think about it until we were an hour into our drive home.

Dear Shelley, Thank you for your post with information regarding your mother’s health. I know this is a difficult situation for you and I would recommend that you take her to one of our Centers of Excellence in MDS for a second opinion. She should be very carefully assessed before undergoing any treatment. Benefits versus risk analysis should be done with any treatment. Many MDS patients get even third and fourth opinions – all from our MDS Centers of Excellence. Following is a link to our Centers of Excellence worldwide https://www.mds-foundation.org/mds-centeres-of-excellence/. I hope this information helps.

Thank you. We did go to MDS center for Excellence that is where they found that it had progressed to AML.
