Patient
I was diagnosed with MDS in November 2022. My immature white blood cell count was very high, 15.6% - (at 20% it is Leukemia; normal is less than 1%). My doctors brought that down with chemotherapy and put me into the NMDP database in search of a stem cell donor and coordinated my treatment with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. NMDP found me an exact matching donor -- in Poland!
With chemotherapy, my doctors got my immature white blood cells under 5%, which qualified me for the stem cell transplant, which I received in October 2023 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. My donor's stem cells arrived at Fred Hutchinson the day after they were harvested!
I was in Seattle for treatment for five months and in the University of Washington hospital there for 26 long days. They sent me home in February of 2024 -- in remission, which is where I have been since. It is good to be alive!
Thank God for to amazing medical care I have received, the NMDP, and the MDS Exchange. Thank You!
