Today I had my blood tests and I ‘m happy to say that they are better than last time . My hmg is up o 9,5 from 8,9 last month. My white cells are still 2800 and my platelets are 218.000 or something like that . So I’m doing quite well for the moment . But one of my mother’s friends has a son and he has acute leuchimia . Well they are kind of confused and desperet because the doctor only gave him 2 weeks to leave . He has the same doctor I have. He has just discovered it a week ago but they say this kind of leuchimia advances very fast . He has gone from 9.1 hmg to 6.2 in 2 days and he almost doesn’t have any platelets He has bruises all over him and he is not doing to good not even after transfusions and other drugs . CAn anybody help us with some advice ? I know the forum is on MDS but maybe someone has this . His mother is desperet and crying all the time and they haven’t told the boy yet. He is only 22. He is too young to die . Please if you know anything that can be done tell me. Thank u . Alexa

I just wanted you to know that I care. I don’t have not much to offer you as I am just learning about all of this stuff too. I just don’t want you to feel alone. Even if there will be no solutions here – there will be concern and caring.
January 24, 2005 at 5:33 pm #3603TerriMemberAlexa, Suzanne may respond to you, she had AML, and went through the Chemo and is doing quite well. Sorry I could not be of help but Bob is still at the MDS stage and has not progressed thank God.

Your friend may want to contact another site http://www.acor.org this is the cancer site. Then type in the search for leukemia. There is a host of information there and there also should be a listserve addtess for talking with other folksJanuary 24, 2005 at 7:03 pm #3605AprilMemberAlexa ~ My mother-in-law has AML. They wanted to try her on a clinical trial but she has refused treatments. Do they know why they can’t try chemo on him?
January 24, 2005 at 7:30 pm #3606B. GreeneMemberWe went from MDS to AML and then chemo etc. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t immediately start the chemo on someone that young? As soon as we were dx it was right now, no wait, do it so something else must be going on. Has the Dr. said why no chemo?
January 24, 2005 at 9:37 pm #3607alexandra7ParticipantThank u all!!
Well about chemo they started it yesterday . They were pretty afraid to start it because he was very weak . Yesterday he had no platelets (That is terrible)!!Now after chemo he has 1000 platelets -think of that the normal rage should be over 100 000 . The problem is that after the chemo all his body hurts up to the point that he can’t take it . If you would see him you would say that he is on the edge between life and death . He can barelly move . I was so impressed today .It maid me see that I should be happy that what I have is not that hard . I will let his mother know what you’ve all said and I’m sure she will apreciate it.January 24, 2005 at 9:43 pm #3608B. GreeneMemberWe will all be hoping and praying it works and he makes it through this ordeal, it isn’t easy but hopefully will put him on the road to remission. His age should help.

Any chance you could get referred to another cancer center, maybe one that has dealt with very young people with life threatening diseases. I will say many prayers for you continued good health and for your friend’s son who really needs to have God at his side right now.
January 24, 2005 at 10:29 pm #3610sarahMemberAlexa, Keeping you and your friend in our prayers. Hope he improves soon.
SarahJanuary 25, 2005 at 12:01 am #3611SuzanneMemberAlexa, does your friend have acute Myeloid leukemia or just acute leukemia? I think there are different kinds. Since he is seeing your dr. I would figure he is being taken care of by a knowledgeabe person for the type of disease he has.A second opinion might not hurt if he has the time. people on the forum have made it back when they were not expected to. When I had chemo it did take my counts down to about zero and they used transfusions of blood and platelets to keep me going until my bone marrow started functioning on it’s own.We are hoping for the best for your friend-22 is very young!
January 25, 2005 at 3:22 pm #3612JimbobMemberAlexa,
January 2, 2004, my family ws told that my CMML had suddenly become AML and, with a WBC of 385,000, I was not likely to even make it through the night. They did use apheresis and heavy chemo and I was able to handle a SCT on March 30, 2004. I have had a number of ups and downs bbbut I am CMML free and getting better every day. Don’t give up on your friend or on yourself. -
