I have had a low grade fever all week. Motrin has kept it almost normal. Today though, it shot up to 103. Motrin brought it back to about 101. My whites have always been good thus far. I do have a bit of congestion and cough, but I am not coughing up anything and nasal mucus is clear. I did start antibiotics today, given as a precaution a week and a half ago. I didn’t take them then because the apparently viral sinus condition cleared up on its own. I am not as sick as I was (except when the fever spikes).

Anyway, tomorrow I have to take one of my girls to Urgent Care because I think she may have strep again. I am wondering if I should go myself if the fever doesn’t stop, or should I wait a few days to see if the antibiotics will work. I hate looking stupid and running to Urgent Care for no reason, but I never get fevers, and rarely got sick until this year. I have been waking up at night with cold, clammy skin, but burning up inside, sometimes with a fever and sometimes not.

Do you think it would be OK to wait until Monday and if I still have the fevers to call hemo, or should I just get things checked out tomorrow (Saturday)? This is still new to me in so many ways.

    Hi Zoe,
MDS and 103 degree temps are not a good combo. Would get it checked out as soon as possible and make certain you take all the antibiotics.
There are too many other things that happen to us that we tend to ignore because of the MDS. Better to have a little egg on your face tomorrow than to find out you have the beginnings of am long term something you could have avoided.

    dear zoe

please, please have it checked out asap – things can get out of control very quickly with mds patients as i saw with my dad

at 103 i would have had my dad in the emergency room

the motrin is just masking any symptoms – please don’t wait

    good luck

    Dear Zoe,
don’t hesitate to contact your doctor in case you have fever.
One MDS-specialist (Professor Mahlknecht,I met on a congress, shocked us MDS-patients with the following phrase, he put it very bluntly:
“Whenever you get fever Friday night, be sure to contact your doc immediately, if you do not reach him, go to some emergency room to check….
If you don’t go, you might be dead by Monday.
    And take your antibiotics !”

    Good luck, Bergit from Germany

Thank you all for your responses. I will have myself checked out today also. After 3 doses of twice a day antibiotics, and another dose of motrin I am still sitting at 101 and feeling lousy.

Went to ER. Lymps are down and neuts and hgb are up. WBC looks good too. Hgb jumped from 10.9 to 11.5 in a week. Did a flu swab also, nope, not the cause. Just checked temp again, now it is at 99.7, so maybe I just needed a little more time to get those antibiotics in. Who knows?
