After 21+ years of MDS it’s hard to believe…
Some of you may remember that in November after a bmb I was told that I had 12% blasts. My plan was to get a referral to Ohio State. My first appointment at OSU was on 12/29. On that day I had a consult and another bmb. On 12/31 we got “the call” from the doctor and I was told that I had full blown Leukemia (AML), 44% blasts. I was admitted to the James Cancer Center on Friday, Jan 2nd.
I am currently on day 7 of a 7day regimen of 7-3; 7 Cyarabine (ara-C) and 3 Daunorubicin. My expected stay here is 30 days. HLA kits will be mailed to my 3 siblings next week. The ultimate goal will be BMT sometime in February. We are very happy with my care and we are confident in our physicians.
My friends and family have setup a CaringBridge site. Feel free to visit me at,

We need all the long-term survivors that we can get, and maybe yours is some sort of a record! I sincerely hope you are getting the best of medical care and personal support from your family and friends. I look forward to being a long-term survivor like you. It’s only been 8 years for me for which I am truly thankful. Please keep us posted on the forum. There are lots of people who care. You are in my thoughts. Sylvia

Sorry to hear the news, You have had a long battle and it certainly is not over with. Don’t you wish sometimes that you had never known about the MDS, I’m sure you have had some worrisome times over the years. You have been pretty lucky over the years, I guess if we were really lucky, we would not have been diagnosed to begin with. Hang in there and know we are pulling for you.

I am 69 and have RA MDS. Sorry to hear of this AML development that you must fight. I pray that you will recover from this terrible disease.
March 16, 2009 at 3:46 am #21893LizMemberHi Pam,
I have been reading your posts from the beginning and found great comfort in the direction your MDS followed for so many years. I’ll keep you and your family in my prayers as you continue this new course.
Your change has raised new questions in my mind. How often did you have a BMB? My doctor’s philosophy is "Why go through the pain if the Procrit is keeping your HGB in an acceptable range?", so I haven’t had one in five years. I know this is a very difficult time for you but would appreciate any advice when you have time.
Keep up your fight, and I’ll help with prayers.
Liz
