Does anyone know the maximum # of blood transfusions you can safely have with MDS? I have heard the range of 80-100 thrown out but don’t know if that is correct. Is the issue iron overload or something else? I realize there is some variability but am interested in any insight people might have on this subject. I know patient currently needing a transfusion ~ 1 x per week.

How frequently transfusions need to be administered will vary depending upon the severity of symptoms and the hemoglobin level. Iron overload may occur if you have received 10-20 units of blood. Patients need to be aware of all treatment options and to feel confident and informed about treatment decisions. Getting advice from an MDS expert about what to do when diagnosed is a critical step in developing the right treatment plan.
