Question re Max # of Transfusions

Does anyone know the maximum # of blood transfusions you can safely have with MDS? I have heard the range of 80-100 thrown out but don’t know if that is correct. Is the issue iron overload or something else? I realize there is some variability but am interested in any insight people might have on this subject. I know patient currently needing a transfusion ~ 1 x per week.

How frequently transfusions need to be administered will vary depending upon the severity of symptoms and the hemoglobin level. Iron overload may occur if you have received 10-20 units of blood. Patients need to be aware of all treatment options and to feel confident and informed about treatment decisions.
