I have been diagnosed with LR MDS 7yrs ago with platelets running around 33. I need a hip surgery do I had a pre trial platelet transfusion which didn’t work. Then I was scheduled to have another pre trial platelet transfusion with an exact match donors and I happened to be on steroids because of an asthmatic cough. They do a blood draw before the transfusion to see where you are at and then another one after the transfusion to see how much your count goes up. Well before the transfusion my count was 68 which is high for me I run at 34 and the nurse said it’s because you’re in steroids. Then after the transfusion my count only went up 10. My hematologist said I think you have ITP because ITP responds to steroid treatment and your low platelet count is not driven by the MDS. So what does this mean do I still have MDS because my red and white counts are normal or ITP because this blood disease also causes low platelets and you can bleed out. Have I possibly been misdiagnosed 6 yrs ago.
