It took me the whole day to find this article again. I believe I was wrong on the benzene link. It seems to be something called Lindane which is an Organochlorine.
The article:
http://www.michaelandjudystouffer.com/judy/articles/horsefly.htm
“Lindane is an organochlorine pesticide found in horse sprays. Lindane is neurotoxic, causing grand mal seizures, and it is highly carcinogenic in laboratory tests. It also causes aplastic anemia, as well as other blood disorders.”
ButchLParticipantI just looked at the Caring Bridge site and Jeff has passed away…..
ButchLParticipantThat is so nice to hear!

ButchLParticipantI am always skeptical about chain emails etc., so I research them. This one is true, although it took place 2 years ago. Here is the analysis from
http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_vicky_field.htmComments: U.S. Army Specialist Chad Snowden was shot in the head by a sniper in Fallujah, Iraq on November 13, 2004, leaving him critically injured. He underwent surgery in Baghdad, where doctors kept him for several days in hopes that his condition would improve so he could be flown elsewhere for further treatment.
While awaiting notification of his departure from Iraq, Snowden’s mother, Vicky Field of Granbury, Texas, composed the prayer request above and emailed it to family and friends. She then flew to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where she spent a month at her son’s bedside monitoring his care and recovery, and fighting to cut through the red tape that threatened to delay his needed transfer to a rehabilitation center.
One year later, the Dallas Morning News reports that Snowden is doing extremely well despite a minor loss of mental capacity and is making plans to attend college. Vicky Field, whose persistent lobbying on behalf of her son won the attention and respect of Defense Department officials, has been given the job of Texas advocate for the support of injured military personnel.
ButchLParticipantSo sad. He was certainly one of the good ones. Now he can be at peace.
ButchLParticipantPhyllis:
So sorry for your loss.

ButchLParticipantI have no facts but just my experiences. From reading this forum everyday and other sources, it would seem that MDS seems to be diagnosed when going for another reason to the doc. In my wife’s case, she had a totally unrelated issue which required routine blood work. Before we knew it they were asking all kinds of questions about how she felt etc. Her platelets were at 10,000. They gave ger tranfusions and hospitalized her. She had no other symptoms other than being tired which we attributed to her 60 hour work weeks.
We did ask about it being hereditary when she was diagnosed as she had 2 daughters. We were told not to worry about that.
Like I said, none of this is fact, just my experience and observations.
Good luck in your search…

ButchLParticipantThe trick with Coumadin is to avoid green leafy vegetables. They contain Vitamin K which thins the blood. My doc told me to let him know if I go on a salad kick or anything like that to let him know and they would adjust as necessary. I have had more clots than I can count. I’ve been on coumadin since 1990 and will have to do so forever. For some reason, if I get off of it, I get a clot. Mine is a rare case and not the norm. I had a clot in the arm once and it was very painful but went away quickly with treatment.
Here is another post on this site about them as well. https://www.mds-foundation.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=003332#000000
I hope he gets better soon….

ButchLParticipantI know when my wife had hers put in, she was awake. We were responsible for flushing it when home which was very easy.
I know in her case, every time she had platelet infusions, they made her sleepy where as red blood gave her some energy.
I hope this helps and good luck!!
