Wendy, I also did not get a response to Aranesp which is like Procrit. My Hemo/Onc kept pushing it untill I showed him a chart I made showing when I got the Aranesp and the HGB values. He ran an EPO test and it showed an ample supply in my blood. I believe the shots may have hastened my AML and yet I have a friend that only gets the Aranesp for his treatment as it raises his HGB. Blessings,
    Russ

Rebecca, MDS can cause all sorts of infections from a compromised immune system, bleeding with low platelets and fatigue with low hemoglobin.
You don’t mentions the particulars of your husbands CBC or where he is being doctored. Take all precaution against infection and have him get checked regularily by an expert hematologist.

The active ingredient in feverfew is parthenolide. Below is an excerpt from an article about research at U. of Rochester Med Center.
    Russ
“In laboratory experiments, they also compared how human leukemia stem cells reacted to parthenolide, versus a common chemotherapy drug called cytarabine. The result: parthenolide selectively killed the leukemia cells while sparing the normal cells better than cytarabine.

Scientists believe parthenolide might also make cancer more sensitive to other anti-tumor agents. And, the UR group was able to demonstrate the molecular pathways that allow parthenolide to cause apoptosis, or cancer cell death, increasing the chances of developing a new therapy.

    Hi Wendy,
I have had quite a few rounds of dacogen and nausea has not been a problem. Before each Dacogen dose I get Anzemet and Decadron in the IV. On the last day of Dacogen Aloxi is sometimes used instead of Anzemet because it lasts longer. Some days during treatment I have them omit the Decadron because it keeps me awake at night. I keep Ativan at home to use if nausea is a problem but Kytril is also good.
I do not take Neupogen or Neulasta so it is possibly the cause of your Dad’s nausea.
    Best wishes,
    Russ

Prayers for you and your MIL. Sounds like she could use some nourishment – I like “Boost” since I react to the soy protein in “Ensure”.
Hopefully your Brother-in-law will concede to allow help.
    Bless you,
    Russ

My CBC shows the blasts as a percentage in the differential and all the Hemo/Oncs I have seen indicate they are immature cells.
BTW, Jack I replied to your private message.

    Lucy,
Your Onc’s advise to do watchful waiting is best. Reading some of these posts can be depressing but remember every case is different and yours must be mild and may not get worse. You might consider saving some of your good stem cells in case you could use them down the road.
    Good luck,
    Russ

    Hi Alice,
I have recorded and plotted my CBC counts for a long time and have noticed that both WBC and PLTs went up when I was on Prednisone for short periods. Also there is some indication that fresh pineapple will raise PLTs.

I don’t know of anyone who had such a good grasp of the blood diseases and treatments – this includes many doctors. He will be sorely missed and my prayers go out to his family.
