My dad was an athlete, a family man, and a man of faith. He played hockey and ran road races well into his 70s, and he lived every day with generosity and humor. In his later 70s, he was diagnosed with MDS. He faced countless transfusions, needles, and treatments, yet he never lost his positivity or his ability to make others laugh—even in his final days. He kept fighting because he didn’t want to leave us, and he worried most about Mom. We miss him deeply, but we carry his spirit with us. On October 24, our city will light up four municipal areas in red for MDS Awareness Day—a symbol that not only raises awareness, but also honors his life, his fight, and the love he gave so freely. And while the official day falls on October 25—the same day we lost him—it carries a double meaning for us, reminding us not only of the importance of awareness but also of the incredible man he was.
