Hi I’m new here. I was diagnosed with MDS 8 years ago but likely had it long before that. It has pretty much been stable. Bone marrow biopsy in 2009 showed trisomy 8 and was hypoplastic. No biopsy since then. Today I had lab work done and for the first time I have nRbc’s. Count is 1.5. It was 0 in October and before that. Wbcs are 2.6, lowest in a long time, and neutrophils are 0.9. Platelets 148, RBCs 3.19. Should I be concerned?

Anyone? Also. Is it possible for that value to return to 0 on its own?

Janice, I would be concerned for sure. You are definitely could be neutropenic and would want to eat accordingly. I would get a second opinion with an MDS specialist. email if you need any help pratt8075@aol.com

Thanks Sherry. I will email you. I am about to quit my job and do something I love, but now I wonder if I shouldn’t so I can keep my insurance. I hate my job, I’m exhausted, but it is what it is I suppose. Talk about bad timing. Or good timing in some ways I guess. Would suck to be sick and jobless.

    Hi, Janice:

Well, the bottom line is that your disease is probably progressing and you’re definitely going to need really really good insurance. Hopefully, you have an excellent oncologist/hemotologist. Stem cell transplant is the only cure for MDS and if you’re willing to do it, you’ll want to start exploring that as soon as possible. My Kaiser plan teams up with City of Hope so I’ve got the best people in my corner. Alas, no donor match and I’m going downhill fast. Love my docs.

thanks gloria. i did go on to have another bone marrow biopsy. there is still trisomy 8 and my bone marrow is still hypoplastic, but there is no developing leukemia or lymphoma, so that is good. my ANC count dropped to 0.53 last checked in early june. i see the hematologist again august 7 to see where things are on that front. i have good health insurance so nothing to worry about there. and i live in the boston area so i’m not worried about doctors either. it’s all still all playing out. i’m sorry to hear you can’t find a donor, that is stressful. i hope that changes.
