Dad diagnosed with MDS in his late 70’s…survived several years in healthy state on Procrit injections. Procrit stopped working and MDS progressed. He started vidaza in his early 80’s. He was relatively physically strong and mentally sound before receiving vidaza. After his 2nd round, we noticed peculiar mental behaviors and within a week or two, sharp decline in cognitive ability. We admitted him to the hospital. There was some speculation that it could be depression, but psychiatrist believed it was medically based. He was placed on anti depressants anyway. Also thought low blood pressure may have caused it, but weeks later no improvement.Within 2 months he was in what appeared to be a full blown demented state becoming incontinent, losing weight due to no desire to eat. After seeing two psychiatrists and two neurologists, he was admitted to a well know research medical facility because his cognitive profile did not fit the typical profiles for known dementia types. Providers believed he might have had a neurological event. After almost every type of scan, tests for other cancers, diseases, medication interactions/toxicity interactions, bacteria/virus/fungal type tests, all came out negative. The only coincidental timing is the treatment of vidaza, but there is no real reported evidence that Vidaza can accelerate or cause dementia. Providers have no identifiable causation. We are at a loss.Thought it important to put this experience out there…maybe there are other cases that are similar as it relates to vidaza treatment. Share please!
