APL is a subtype of AML according to the FAB Classification of AML.
Nowadays however it is thought that this classification is only of limited value and there are more important prognostic factors influencing the disease course that the FAB have taken into consideration. Especially one should mind chromosomal aberrations of the proliferating cell clone.

You could find useful medical link below:

Requires lots of patience to get through, but it’s worth it.

    Courage, Andrzej

Thanks a lot,Andrzej. Our hopes are many because his doctor told us that being 22 years older he has many chance to be cured, but i don’t know if this means some years to live or no APL.I will look at that link and thanks again.

Alice here is another link. defines your type of acute leukemia. look under trials on that site and you will see info about treatment. It sounds more hopeful than most bacause it says 3 out of 4 are CURED after treatment with chemo and a drug called tretinoin.

Thank you Suzanne.I understand that your complete remission is doing from some time,so what type of AML you have?My boyhriend takes Diamalin(with tretinoin) and chemo (now it is at his second round of chemo)and his blood tests on friday were normal(6800 wc,hmg 12 and 230000platelets).I just want to ask you i after this round of chemo that values will decrease again, and for how long?I ask you this because i saw that you have made chemo and maybe you can help, here docs are not so comunicative.

Alice, our types are different but the general way chemo goes may be the same.I printed out the list of types to ask my Dr which i was the next time i see him. Yes my counts went down again after the 2nd round and they were up to normal after the 1st. It took them longer to come back-which they say is normal -but they did. I think it was close to 5 or 6 weeks. some things are slightly below normal now-maybe because of the Zarnestra but my doctors are very happy. No counts are in a place to cause any problems. They tell me that my counts may never be exactly normal again because of the chemo.
