I have del 5q and my hemoglobin is 10. I am a person who doesn’t exercise. I do daily housework and can walk on the level for a couple miles and not mind it. But, if I walk up the hill on our property, my heart rate goes to 136. Recently, hand sawing a tree limb into pieces made my heart rate go way up and I felt awful (no chest pain, just felt terrible). Is it hard on my heart when this happens? If I keep walking up the hill, daily, will that help me to “get in shape”? Or, is it harmful?

A low hemoglobin count reduces the body’s ability to carry oxygen to vital organs. This may lead to shortness of breath and increase in pulse rate which are the ways by which the body compensates to increase the output of the heart. These may also lead to palpitations and chest pains.
