    My wife was recently diagnosed with Isolated del(5q) MDS. I do not no much except that it is a unique type of MDS. Her hemoglobin is lightly below normal right now and she is not symptomatic. The doctor at an MDS Center prescribe waiting and checking.

    I wonder if there are people who have the type of MDS or others who can shed some light on this form of MDS.

    Several features are often shared by patients with 5q- syndrome, although some variability exists in the clinical course and presentation. These features are:
    1. Relatively good prognosis with long survival and a lower chance of developing acute myelogenous leukemia;
    2. Chronic anemia requiring red blood cell transfusions;
    3. Elevated platelet count; and
    4. Distinct pathologic features on bone marrow specimens, especially involving the platelet precursor cells, megakaryocytes
