Good Morning All:
I notice quite a few of you discussing your use of pineapple to stimulate platelets. Are you using fresh or canned? How much per day?
Mike’s platelets came down a little and we want to get those right back up if we can. Thanks.
February 1, 2006 at 7:58 pm #11597bhansonMemberHi SandyB, We all eat or juice fresh pineapple. It seems we range from 1/3 to a whole pineapple a day. Bernard juices a whole pineapple and drinks it through a straw because his mouth gets sore. We also take raw black sesame seeds and grind them in a coffee grinder. He takes 2 TBS. with water everyday. Hope it helps. Best wishes, Bonnie
February 1, 2006 at 9:15 pm #11598JaniceRMemberMy father’s been eating a fresh pineapple everyday. It definitely helped raise his platelets. I can’t find where to get the black sesame seeds though. I live in NJ, but we’re checking my dad into NY Presbyterian for his clinical trial (Arsenic and Ara-c) on Sunday. Any ideas where I can get the black sesame seeds?

Black sesame seeds are usually found in the ethnic food section of most stores. We get them at the health food store in the asian food aisle. They come in a bag of about 24oz.

Hans takes 1/2 fresh large pineapple a day, and in about two weeks his platelets go from just about nothing to in the 300’s. Then he stops until needed. Pretty unbelievable!

February 2, 2006 at 4:36 am #11602JaniceRMemberHi Dee: I heard of people putting a whole pineapple in the blender and drinking it through a straw to avoid getting sores. Did you see what Esme wrote about Hans getting his platelets up in the 300’s when he eats pineapple? That’s just amazing.
February 2, 2006 at 5:38 am #11603SandyBMemberA couple of you have mentioned “mouth sores.” Is that something that preceded eating the pineapple, or is this something that eating the pineapple causes? Sandy
February 2, 2006 at 6:36 am #11604pattiMemberSandy,
I think some of the different chemo treatments can cause mouth sores. I know Dee got them when she was on Vidaza. Not everyone gets them. Just depends on the person.
Dee, definately try the straw. Did the l-lysine help heal up the mouth sores? I am sending good thoughts your way for the thalidomide to work. Also, there is something about combining the fresh pineapple with the black sesame seeds that works for platelets. I’m not exactly sure what it is, I just know that what I read said to use both. Although, it seems some people are responding just to the pineapple. I ran this by our naturapath and it just blows her away. But it works. I hope you can start the pineapple soon as I know it will help your platelets at least a little bit. I think how much it helps depends on the person. My MIL does not get a huge boost but she does get between 3k -5k boost.

Now from a broken tooth causing irritation, which will be repaired when the “thrush” is healed up. If a person eats acidic fruits they irritate the existing condition. He takes nystatin for healing the sores.

You can ask at the produce department to core it and they will at no charge.
I do not use the sesame seeds. I bought them by Mike did not like it. Thankfully the pinaplle alone works for him.
February 3, 2006 at 2:46 am #11607bhansonMemberHi SandyB, We get the black sesame seeds on the internet because we live in a small town and even the health food store does not stock them. However, they would probably order them for us. There are many sites on google that you can order the raw seeds from. We grind them in a small coffee grinder and Bernard takes them with water. He eats a pineapple a day and drinks peanut shell tea. He is one that has to juice the pineapple and drink it through a straw because the acid actually causes mouth sores in his case. He is very sensitive, but hasn’t had any chemo yet. We are still do the natural things. Best wishes, Bernard and Bonnie
