How many of you have had your spleen removed? What criteria did the surgeons or hematologists use to decide it was time.

What tests were used to make the decision?

    Lindajo,

Sorry, I don’t have any answers to you spleen questions. I am sure you will hear from someone on this as I have read a few posts on this.

I read your profile and am curious about what type of vitamins you are on. Would you care to fill us in?

    Mary

I don’t mind sharing but I have that information at home and right now I don’t have an internet connection there.

Please send me a private e-mail and I will send a copy from my yahoo account. I can copy and past something from there. I don’t know how to copy and paste from there to here. Every time I try it doesn’t work. Linda

Hi lindajo, My husband did have his spleen removed in May 2003. He had severe ITP, and dr’s thought that the spleen was destroying his platelets. He was also taking high doses of NASAIDS at the time for rheumatoid arthritis which also destroys platelets. The cause of the ITP.was never determined The spleen appeared to be normal after it was removed, nothing unusual about it.The only criteria seemed to be the blood counts, it was thought that removing the spleen might fix the platelets, that didn’t happen. He went down hill very quickly after that surgery. He had a brain bleed soon after( stroke like symptoms). And was dx with MDS in Sept. I would think long and hard before considering splenectomy. It’s a major and very painful surgery. Terri’s husband had radiation treatments for enlarged spleen, which seemed to help.
    Take care, Ellie

    Dera Linda,

I would also like to know what vitamins you have been taking. And did you have any nutritionist/doctor advice as to what to take?

Many thanks for sharing this information,
    G

My vitamins were recommended by a chiropractor. The ones I take always, are a high dose of B-Complex, Calcium with Vitamin D3, L-tyrosine and a Pineal Gland supplement. From time to time we have also tried Omega 3 supplements. Chiropractors generally recommend higher dosages than nutritionist. A good source for information on supplements is also Dr. Andrew Weil at Tuscan Arizona. Linda

He has extensive knowlege in nutrition. His brother also recovered from Acute Granolycytic Leukemia and has been in remission 9 years.

OOps the message posted different than I saw it. My local chiropractor Dr. Weilert in Humboldt Kansas is the one whose brother had leukemia. The way the last message looked was confusing.
