I was diagnosed after 2 years of the dictors not being able to figure it out. I’m low risk w: 3%blasts & no white blood cells. I have been matched with my brother for a possible bone marrow transplant. I’m wondering what other people’s experiences have been w: starting chemo or doing the transplant. I find it odd the doctors want to wait to do the transplant. I’m not having symptoms currently but wouldn’t it make sense to do it now while I’m younger & not gravely ill?

Although a bone marrow transplant is the only cure for MDS, it is not a benign treatment and your doctor can determine whether or not the risk outweighs the benefit. Younger patients with higher-risk disease and good overall health are generally considered appropriate candidates for transplantation. A study has shown that in patients with lower-risk MDS, it may be best to wait until disease progression; performing transplant can be more life-threatening to the patient than waiting since his/her chance of dying from MDS is fairly low.
