Hi, Charlie had BMB last week, they were unable to get aspiration. Been waiting patiently for results. Dr called today to state they still do not have a count on blast in marrow, however informed us he had 3% in peripheral blood. First time seeing blasts in circulating blood. Wonder why they are having difficulty with biospy? Because his spleen is so enlarged, Dr has decided he wants him to go to Fred Hutchinson again for a evaluation for second opinion on removing spleen and what we need to do at this time. Energy level has been very low.

Just want you to know that I’m thinking of you and Charlie. I’m sorry to hear that there are blasts in his peripheral blood. Hope you guys hear some encouraging news and treatment options from Fred Hutchinson. Try not to worry…hang in there.
Take care,
Jody

Hi, I would be curious too as to why they can’t get a aspiration to show blast count, I don’t want to jump the gun here, lord know’s I’m not a specialist or anything, but from what we were told, once the blasts reach the peripheral blood then that usualy means that the blasts are high.
hopefully you guy’s are told different than we were… a second opinion sounds like a good idea.
your Charlie was dx. in 01 and this is 05 so you’ve come along way babyAugust 3, 2005 at 1:53 am #8045eveMembermy dad has blasts in the peripheral blood and the hemodoc is not concerned – he says it has to do with the fibrosis my dad also has – when he had a bmb his peripheral blasts were much higher than his marrow blasts

I often have 1-4% circulating blasts in the peripheral blood; my bone marrow blast will be 5-10%. At times the peripheral blasts will be 0%. I think the number of blood cells that are examined is small (typically 100) so it is not a definitive result. My doctor would “prefer” a 0% peripheral blast count but would not be concerned until it reaches much higher (15-20%). I just got back from a BMT consultation with Dr. Deeg at Fred Hutchinson. Good luck on your trip if you decide to go back again for evaluation.August 4, 2005 at 2:04 am #8047TerriMemberHi Sarah, How is Charlie doing, Hope things start getting better.
keeping you both in my prayersAugust 4, 2005 at 7:53 pm #8048sarahMemberHi Terri, he is quite sore from BMB. Hurt more than usual, since they tried 4 times to aspirate and never were successful. Found out today lab cannot give us a report on the biopsy. Never been told this before, thought we would get a count of blast in marrow. Energy level still low. We are waiting to be evaluated at Fred Hutchinson. All we know certain is spleen is enlarged and seeing 3% blasts in bloodstream now.
August 5, 2005 at 1:21 am #8049gemloyearMemberHi Sarah, I’m sorry to hear that Charlie has blasts in the blood. Lets hope that it’s not too serious. Your doing the right thing in getting a second opinion re. the spleen.
You asked a few days ago if anyone’s platelets took a big swing , Glen’s has in the past, but this week they went up to 132000 from 31000 4 wks ago. One explanation that we’ve had is that there’s only approx. 1 teasp. in the entire blood, and they sometimes clump so are hard to count. We’ll keep Charlie in our prayers.
EllieAugust 5, 2005 at 1:47 am #8050TerriMemberSarah, BOb had the blast in the blood first dx before the initial vidaza treatment in the fall of 2003. He had more than 3% I think it was higher then the marrow. Hasn’t had any since so far.
When are you going to Fred Hutchinson supposed to be one of the best.
Thinking of youAugust 5, 2005 at 2:22 am #8051sarahMemberHi Terri, This will be our second trip to the Hutch. They treated us very good last time. Still waiting for confirmation on appointment. Hope you and Bob are having a good week. Thanks for your thoughts. Thanks Ellie for the prayers. Hope Glen is doing well.
Take care,
SarahAugust 24, 2005 at 12:59 am #8052danzMemberI had my BMT done by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center / Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. The first doctor I saw there was Dr. Joachim Deeg. As I went through the system, I got Dr. Katherine Doney. These are two of the very best in my opinion.
Just prior to the BMT, I had 5% blast in the bone marrow and 9% in the peripheral blood. One thing you really need to be concerned about are blasts in the spinal fluid. That determines the kind of treatment you will need.
If you happen to get the yellow team, tell them I said Hi!
August 25, 2005 at 1:40 am #8053KathrynMemberHey Sarah, just wanted to let you know that I’m thinking about you and Charlie. My heart aches so for you guys. Second opinion are definitely a good thing. Knowledge is power. The more you know, the better decision you can make for his treatment. Please keep us posted and I will keep you both in my prayers.
Kathryn
