My 86 year old father was diagnosed with MDS in September 2017 though he has had some mild anemia since the end of 2015. Prior to being diagnosed he was having intermittent nose bleeds that we couldn’t really explain. He was also diagnosed with dementia in 2013 which was rediagnnosed as Vascular Dementia in 2016. Because of the persistent anemia, we decided to proceed with th hemaotology workup which after the bone marrow biopsy showed MDS. His platelets usually run above 100,000 but below 120,000. White cells around 3.5, Hgb currently around 10.5. We have elected supportive care only at this time and based on his lab values no transfusion have been needed. Our biggest problem are recurrent nosebleeds. We have seen an ENT physician. She did not see any abnormalities in his nasal passages. Noting to cauterize. We are using saline gel to the nasal passage and a humidifier. Also use a cotton ball soaked with Afrin when the nose bleed happens. The nose bleeds do stop but are quite annoying for my father. Does anyone else have any suggestions on managing the nosebleeds or treatments for the nosebleeds that they have received. Obviously, platelets are not needed based on his values. We also just did a sinus ct scan last week and are waiting for the results.
