    Hi everyone,
My father is having a bone marrow biopsy on Monday to determine his exact MDS diagnosis. Can anyone tell me if this process hurts? He is 79 years old, is hospitalized and recovering from pneumonia. His pneumonia has cleared but in the whole process his anemia has gotten worse. After requesting a hematologist, he discovered through blood cultures that my dad has MDS but needs a biopsy to determine the extent of it. If anyone can shed some light on this process, please let me know. The internet has made me very depressed over this. He is a COPD patient who has one lung and almost did not make it through this pneumonia recovery. He finally pulled through and now this….I appreciate all the advice we can get.

This all happened during Spring break in Florida. We came up to permanently move my parents’ belongings to New Jersey, where we are living. I need a good specialist in the Northern New Jersey area….doesn’t anyone know of any?

    Thank you.

I would insist that he is sedated. This way there is no pain or memory of the procedure. If he isn’t sedated, it could be VERY uncomfortable and it certainly doesn’t need to be. My husband has had several, both ways, and he will never have one again without sedation.

    Hope this helps.

There are other members on here from New Jersey. Hopefully, they will respond to you about the docs in your area.

    Hi there,

I have had lots of Bone Marrow aspirations and they are painful without sedation or entonox. I wouldnt ever have one without.

My dad had one and is was very painful but the doctor did not give the numbing medication time to work. Either ask them to wait after the numbing medication or request that you dad be sedated.

I have had a few and the first one was without sedation. Never again. Insist on the sedative.

I have had 10-12 bone marrows. They do numb the skin around the site. It does hurt a little when they pull the aspiration but it a brief thing. I have had splinters and paper cuts that have hurt just as bad. Each persons tolerance is different. If you want sedated get sedated. For me the first time I had some valium. The hangover from the valium was worse than all of the pain from bone marrows together. None of the pain is as bad as childbirth was. Just breathe through it and focus on something else.
