I have transfusion-dependent MDS. My last hgb was 7.3 but I knew when my hgb was 8.2 that I needed a transfusion because of the way my body was feeling. I had a covering oncologist who would not give me the transfusion until the hgb dropped to 7 but I did get at 7.3. I received 2 units. I generally only get 1 which does not help very much as my hgb drops fast. I am having pain in my teeth and gums as well as trouble with my eyes. Does anyone else have these problems?

Hi Marcy – I am also transfusion dependant for the past 18 months. I receive 3 units every 3 weeks – usually when my hgb gets down to 5.5 or so. The 3 units probably gets me back up to about 8.0 after transfusion. I do not have any symptoms related to sore teeth or troubles with eyes. If your symptoms are related to transfusions I can only guess it might be related to iron overload which can damage some organs (usually heart, liver, kidneys)
