My Dad hated the picc line when he was at NYP. He got a REAL bad infection from it. They just give him dacogen through a regular IV (each day a new one) for five days. When his treatment is over (after about 1-1/2 hrs), he leaves the hospital like nothing happened. He WAY too busy and active to have anything hanging out of his arm. When he was in for pneumonia, in the middle of the night in his sleep, he yanked the IV out and made a mess!

    Oh yeah, Jim:
My Dad’s counts look like yours (doc says they are good) and he doesn’t need a porta-cath.

    Janice,

It’s hard on the veins to have them poked daily like that. Why not have them leave a heparin lock in his arm just for the week he gets the dacogen? They can tape it down real good and put a net over it. The heparin lock is just the small plastic catheter that goes into the arm – no tubing attached or hanging. At least then he won’t damage his veins so much. Just a thought.

To all, John will be starting his 4th cycle of dacogen on Tues. Today he had tx to try and boost the red cells, they are being very stubborn.WBC is at 5.4 with the help of neupogen and the platelets are going up and up, coming in today at 159. He does not feel well and Dr. says to start exjade. After reading comments from all of you, we asked the doc if a lower dose would be ok. He said no problem. Thanks, Dottie
