I’m a 55 year old woman recently diagnosed with MDS in November of 2015 became transfusion-dependent after blood dropped to a 5 and had to receive 4 pints of blood ever since then have been getting two pints of blood once a month started taking idaza and I’m on my 5th cycle just finished and they would like to do a stem cell transplant I have compromised lungs and only a half match. I’ve seen two specialists one of which said not to do transplant the other wants me to do and as soon as possible if the lungs can get better. It seems the vidaza is working to keep my blood count up I haven’t had to be transfused in 9 weeks and will be retested next week. I’m very confused on what I should do because with only a half match relative my daughter and a lung issue I don’t know if I should wait and continue the vidaza to see if something new comes up for better match or if I should go for the stem cell transplant with a half match of my daughter.

Has the possibility of a cord blood transplant been discussed? One of my doctors is a big proponent of cord blood transplants when there isn’t a good match. Maybe a second opinion from a center that does them would be worth a try?

Cord Blood transplant has not been suggested at this time no one has even brought that up to me as an option. I have seen two specialist in ny so far. I don’t know if I should try another hospital say dana farber in boston.

Lynn, You are still young. I think you should consider calling the Cancer Treatment of America in Chicago. They are experts at the stem cell transplant process. Also you should have a match out of the world wide database. It is worth a call and a one trip there to see what they say they can do for you. I am totally impressed with this facility as I am here for a stem cell transplant. This is an awesome place where you can actually stay in a condo like room in the hospital while you are outpatient. They treat you like you are their mother. I would sure call them.
