My father has been admitted to ER and now in hospital due to severely low platelet count. He was given local radiation therapy to reduce the size of his enlarge spleen about a month ago. Since then his platelet and hbg is dropping. Since admitted to hospital on Feb 12, 2011, he required 5 HLA matched platelet and 4 blood transfusions. Doctors can not figure out why he is depleting all this platelet and blood. Did any of the patient suffer anything like this? We are at a loss here and thinking may be this is the end? Your kind replies are most appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Fahmi

A swollen spleen and need for transfusions is very common. It doesn’t mean the end is near. He can recover from many crisis points if he gets prompt and knowledgeable treatment. Look for a recognized Center of Excellence. The international branches recognize hospitals that are on the cutting edge of treatment and research. I am not familiar with the one closest to you. Infections can cause even earlier destruction of blood cells. Hopefully they also have him on a broad spectrum antibiotic. How is he doing today?
