    Hi folks …
I came acrosss something that might be worth asking your doctor(s) about. I have had a couple of nosebleeds this Fall/Winter already and went to the ER for the first one and all they did was cauterize it and sent me home.
On the second one, I went to an ENT specialist who told me in the future to get a cotton ball and stretch it into an oblong shape similar to a football and completely soak it with Afrin. Then insert it into the nostril and put pressure on it for 20 to 30 minutes (I have a clamp from the ER) and then gently remove it. I have done so twice more and it has worked for me.
He did say that if I felt blood going down the back of my throat or if I was still bleeding after trying the Afrin/cotton ball twice, then seek medical help. Maybe this will help someone. Happy Holidays !!

    Jerry,

Thanks for your tips. What is Afrin?

What chrom abnormalities do you have? and What are you platelet numbers when you have your nose bleeds?

    Jerry,
Thanks for the tip, I have had a few minor nose bleeds, they don’t last long, the low humidity doesn’t help the situation. The only thing I will say about Afrin is to not use it too often, I mean as a nasal spray, it can be very additive. When it first came out I used it quite a bit to help with a chronic stuffed up nose, it worked great, but I over used it and it made the situation worse.

    Jack …
Absolutely correct … I got hooked on Dristan once and it was a bear to get off of … the Afrin as this doc recommended is to be used only to stop nosebleeds because it constricts the blood vessels.

Chuck … Afrin is an OTC nasal spry that can be quite addictive … in fact, I think the instructions say to not use it more than 3 days … but this is a different usage and would not be used daily …

My platelet numbers are currently around 12 … very very low … but they have been as low as 7 … as far as my chromosomal abnormalities go, I do not have them at my fingertips but suffice to say there are several which puts me into a higher risk category.

    Jerry,
That’s the first time I have been called “absolutely correct” since I got married.

Jerry, The reason I asked about your chrome abnormalities is be cause I have a bunch of abnormal chromes and I am wondering what may lie ahead for me.
