Hi, my father had his CBC done in Greece. Overall steady WBC same at 2.1 , RBC 4.8 HGlb 10 but his platelets shot up from 48,000 to 88,000. I know this is good. Has that ever happened to anyone else?

Father (78) MDS no blasts no chromosome abn, no tx, diagnosed 2 months ago but had it for more than a year

Yes my husbands platelets have gone from 21000 to 124000, they tend to fluctuate a great deal and level off somewhere in between. Neil has a good explanation for this.the platelets only comprise approx. 1 teasp. in the blood and tend to clump together so are difficult to count. Our Doc doesn’t seem too concerned unless they get too low, below 50000. If Neil responses he can give a more detailed explanation.

Hi – my platelet count went from 38,000 to 106,000 when I had pneumonia – then back down again to 40,000 after I recovered. My doctor thought the increase was due to the pneumonia and the platelets were acting like white blood cells would normally. My wbc’s stayed in the normal range at that time – it’s very confusing!
Now I’m in the 30,000 range.

It is very difficuly yo figure out why platelets increase in large numbers. Clumping may be the reason. If do they will drop back at the next CBC. Lets hope there is another reason and they stay up.
