My mom was diagnosed about a year ago with MDS. She is 74. She was having problems keeping her hemoglobin up so she is on a regimen of chemo pill every other day and shots twice a month. She has very little appetite and slight fever and balance problems which are making her very depressed. Will these side effects lessen and will she begin to feel better?

Dear Ellie, As is the case with other treatment drugs, your mother may feel even worse before she feels better. So it’s important to stick with her treatment to give the medicine a chance to work. If the drug is improving her health, then her doctor will most likely recommend that she keep taking it while helping to manage her side effects. Benefits of treatment versus risk analysis should be done so it is important to let her physician know about her quality of life issues and the side effects. In addition, we recommend that you take her to one of our Centers of Excellence in MDS for a second opinion. Following is a link to our Centers of Excellence worldwide https://www.mds-foundation.org/mds-centeres-of-excellence/. I hope this information helps.
