My dad’s counts are low and they said before they start his chemo they want to give him a transfusion. I believe it’s a great idea but they say my dad has mds but yet they want to start chemo asap. Also, he is sleeping about 18-20 hrs a day and falls too sleep really sudden. Any advice or opinions?

Normal platelet count is 150,000 to 450,000.
Many MDS patients go thru chemo, depending upon the classification of MDS.
Based on your comments it would seem his red cells are low, thus the fatigue/sleeping.
Hope he is being treated by a hematologist that is experienced in treating MDS patients, particularly those with his classification. This is very important!
Age is an important factor. Older the patients have a more difficult time.
Transfusions are a normal means of keeping red counts up.

He’s being treated at UCSF by a Dr. Damon. They said that they will give him a transfusion before he goes for chemo…
