    Bety,

My father has been tx three times and he usually feels much better almost immediately. The last tx lasted 4 wks but he started Vidaza in the middle of that which apparently pushes your levels down. I am fairly new to this but your husband’s levels sound very low. Every case is different.

Thanks Lynette. My Dad does have atrial fib so I would assume the doc has recommended a slower tx. One of the problems we have run into is the hospital does not have its own blood bank and we have had to wait to get the blood. Thanks for the clarification.

I’m glad that Dr Kou had a possible explanation for your mil’s setback. She sounds like quite a woman. You are both in my thoughts.

His platelets went from 32 yesterday to 20 this morning so my mom just called and said they were transfusing him with 2 bags of platelets before releasing him from the hospital. I’m glad to hear that this is normal and we will look into going elsewhere for future tx. Thanks again.

    Neil,
What is erythropoetin and what acronym would that be listed by on the chemistry/hemotology reports? Iron? Where do I find that?

It sounds like I shouldn’t panic about this but I feel like you must be as proactive as possible and I want to take that pressure off my parents. Thank you for the help

    Eve,

I believe it is 80k That is the note on his hemotology report from Friday along with 480mcg of neupogen.

They gave my father both Procrit and Neupogen today and will do the same tomorrow and then test his blood counts on Wednesday. They mentioned doing the Procrit for 5 days and the Neupogen for 10 days and hopefully he could avoid a tx. Has anyone followed this protocol? I thought a tx would be better but maybe not.

He is scheduled to see the doctor tomorrow. I thought that they were giving him the neupogen in place of a tx or to possibly defer the need for transfussion. Neil- Isn’t the Vidaza for the blasts? If not what do they usually administer for blasts? I live about an hour away from my parents so I am heading over this morning and will check his condition. I doubt I can convince him to go over to the hospital today but we’ll see.
    Thanks for the support

Met with doctor on Wednesday to start Vidaza. He said he would not stop the coumadin until his platelets were below 50. Today was the 3rd day of Vidaza and so far he is feeling good. They have been giving him so anti-nausea meds before so they appear to be working. We did speak with the doc about possible SCT. He mentioned a possible “mini” due to his age. Is anyone familiar with that?
Thanks to all for the well wishes, it means so much.

Thanks for the responses. We will be meeting with his doctor at Dana Farber on Wednesday to start the Vidaza. He had mentioned stopping the coumadin before but there has been no definitive instruction. Not sure why they selected Vidaza over Dacogen but from reading posts on the forum it sounds as if it’s not as intensive.
