Thanks Ellie. I called Mom right away and told her what you said. Of course, today is a holiday weekend and she does not want to fuss…Very frustrating.

nancymMemberHi. After 3 weeks of Procrit, Mom is doing well and responding. Her labs came back: NBC 5.9, Hemo 10.6 (from 9), HCT 3.7, Peas(?) 296. I know hemoglobin, but what are the other numbers? (I got this info over the phone and don’t know if I heard correctly. NBC poss RBC?).
One question Mom has…Now she notices after her treatment, she has energy for about 3 days, then she is very tired. She wants to know if this is normal.
Thanks for your support.

nancymMemberHi Hunter Bob.
That was my post regarding Mom’s fatigue. She is going for her 3rd injection of Procrit today. At first she was really concerned about the fatigue. When she spoke to her PCP about it, he told her to rest and let her energy go towards making blood. I will say her skin tone is better and she reports her breathing is easier. We hope Procrit is working. I hope my words encourage you and you feel better soon.

Nancy
nancymMemberThis is one small piece of information I was able to dig up and thought I would share with the group.

nancymMemberJack,
My Mom got her lab report and read it to me over the phone. Actually, it is not an extra chromosome. She has 13q-. In all my reading I have not found any references to this. I wonder if all the chromosomal abnormalities associated with MDS have the ability to change with time…
Thanks for your post,
Nancy
nancymMemberThanks Bill. I found your post helpful. I am trying to anticipate the best I can. I don’t want to buy tomorrow’s trouble today, but I do like to have choices…
Nancy
nancymMemberThanks Joan.
Do you have any idea why one worked better than the other? Are they two different classes of drugs or just different formulations of the same thing?
Nancy
nancymMemberHi Jack.
So if Procrit doesn’t work, the only alternative is transfusions?
Nancy
nancymMemberThanks to all. I found all of your posts helpful. Mom goes to the doctor in a few days and now has a vocabulary and is already thinking about possible options.

nancymMemberHi John.
Best wishes for your father’s care. I live in the suburbs near Chicago. How did you go about finding a facility that has more experience treating MDS? I found out today the diagnosing doctor is a Hematologist/Oncologist (according to Mom). I’m trying to get the time off to go to her appointment next week to talk to the Doctor.
Two more concerns I have are 1. Mom and Dad still live in their home of 50 years. How realistic is this when dealing with MDS? They both depend on each other…Mom cooks and Dad shovels snow (slowly), helps with cleaning etc. I don’t know how good my Dad will be as a care giver. 2. Generally speaking, what is the percentage of early MDS patient who progress to AML?
Thanks,
Nancy
