    Hi Sandy,
My Mom was on ARA-C injections for 7 months(7 days for one week per month). She was on a very low dose. Few side effects–mild to moderate nausea. However, this was usually helped w/ medication.

    Hi Patti
You might want to consider having a “clotting time” blood test done before altering Vit. K. This test will tell you the time it takes for the person to clot blood. The test is usually done to determine whether or not Vit. K is in order.

    Kristy,
I agree w/ Gloria. My Mom had induction with ARA-C and Daunorubicin. We received news today that her marrow is clean–REMISSION!!. However, the past two weeks have been hell. She developed heart failure, kidney failure, 2 bacterial infections and a fungal infection.
Heart and kidneys were in great shape prior to treatment. Mom wanted to go forward with the induction, knowing the risks because without induction, there were no other options. She would have gone home w/ hospice.
It is at times a no win situation, but your Mom needs to make an informed decision. I’ll pray for you and your Mom.

    Hi Kristy,
I’m sorry to hear about your Mom. Not only do I know how you feel, I’m living it. My Mom relapsed in June–she was put on Decitibine. No improvements in count at all. In fact, she was worsening, but she felt ok. Her only option was induction. My Mom is 75 yrs, however, she was very healthy. She was admitted to NYP and has begun induction. The first BMB showed that most of the leukemic cells were gone. However, since there were a few left, her doctor recommended a second round immediately. She received traditional 7+3, now she is getting 5+2. Risks are high due to the fact that she presently has low counts. However, no other option. If we wait, leukemic cells will win out.(Blasts were 87% in blood when we began). It is a difficult decision, but for my Mom- she wanted to fight and achieve remission again. My Mom is 10 years older than your Mom, but the induction was the last resort for her.
I know how scared you feel–stay strong.
    Prayers and good thoughts,
    Lynette

    Janice,
I am VERY happy for you and your Dad!!! Wow!! We have been cheering your Dad on–My Mom hasn’t has much success w/ Decitibine. Platelets are still a problem–needing transfusions. I have a feeling we’ll be heading back to NYP soon.
    Take care

    Lacey,
Patti’s remedy is a good one. It is the formula that we use in the hospital to help patients w/ mouth sores as a result of Chemo. Any flavor of Maalox or Mylanta will do. the mixture may be used as a “swish and spit” as well–since some may be very sensitive to even a small dose of Benadryl.
    Good luck

    Bill,
How far are you from NYC? Drs. Feldman and Roboz are the best. They are located at New York Presbyterian–a center of excellence.
    Good luck

My Mom is on Decitabine. It is covered by Medicare. She takes it through a peripheral line, no port needed at this time.

    Hi Jeff,
You’re correct! Because of your age, blood can be infused at a faster rate. Older persons run the risk of fluid overload because of possible heart and kidney disease. Blood can only stay out of refrigeration for 30 mins. However, there is a device called a blood warmer that is used in some cases. It should not be so cold that it gives you a chilled feeling while being infused.
    Good luck

    Kristy,
Thanks for the update. It means so much to my Mom to know that others are doing well on the same treatment plan. Today, Mom had lab work–ANC was 700 which was up from 400 on Monday. Platelets are 40,000 two days after transfusion. So far, cycle one has not been too difficult–just waiting to see if blasts go down.
