I am encouraged here. Maybe my dad just needs to get his lungs better… and hopefully then he can just live with supportive care.

Do any of you have blasts in your marrow/blood?

Hmm… my father was treated as an AML patient. The only thing was that the hemotologist didn’t have anymore options so when we transferred him to another hospital, I guess they wanted to look at it differently.

The doctors did say my father’s case is not quite as severe as they thought it was and his MDS treatment can wait. First of all, they have to heal his lungs which are badly ravaged by bacteria and fungus.

Do you know what type of hypomethalating agents they use to treat +8 chromosomes?

    Hi patti,

“…I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13 (NLT)

    Amen.

    Hi KWJ,

    My thoughts are with you.

My dad is now going through exactly what your dad went through … he’s got a bacterial infection in the blood, his platelet count is 6…

He’s also on antibiotics and responding well to it at the moment too…

But reading what your dad went through, we can never take anything for granted…

Thank you for still having a positive spirit.

Hello Wendy… we share the same name and our dad is also roughly the same age … of course yours is younger than mine a year…

I don’t know what advice I can offer… to be honest, my dad can be quite negative … in fact last week he said he won’t be able to go through with the chemo… which devastated us obviously to hear such words… but this week when the results came back and my dad was dx-ed with AML, sure he was upset the day he found out but the next day he seemed at peace and prepared and I’m sure he’s frightened but you gotta do what you gotta do to live…

As for my dad, he’s also quite stubborn… so i’m sure in the coming weeks a lot more emotions will be seen but right now, we’re all trying to be positive and realistic too… which i think is a good thing for us…

Anyway, as for activities to keep him busy, if he’s so down now it’ll be difficult to get him to do anything… I think you gotta be upbeat around him – show him you love him and he matters the world to you and your family… once he sees hope there… it might help… and try not to show you’re upset that he’s upset… it’s worse… hahaha…

maybe you can play board games with him… smile watch movies together…

I’ll be thinking and praying for … hope to hear good news…

    Hey janiceR,

my dad is going to be doing the idarubicin + ara C chemo… reading through what you’ve written, it’s so worrying!

Hopefully my dad’ll be able to pull through…

unfortunately at his age, a BMT is not possible so it’ll just hopefully kill off the cells..

according to my dad’s doc, he said that if we eradicate the aml he’ll just revert back to MDS which means… would a relapse also be very possible??

    Thanks Russ for the prayers…

You’re quite the survivor… reading all the rounds of Vidaza and Dacogen it’s amazing!

I’m sure whatever path you take, whichever option you take, it’ll be ok

    Dear Russ,

My dad was just diagnosed with AML yesterday and it seems he’s been given the same 3 options as you. Lucky for you you’re in America where the said drugs are available.

My dad has no choice since we live in Malaysia and to travel now we don’t think is wise. So I believe we will be doing option 2. We don’t know what drugs will be used but from my brief reading last night, most of the chemo drugs are the same…

I’m just worried that my dad can’t take it.. but the doctor reassured us there are drugs to counter the after effects… so we don’t know…

    Dear friends,

So my dad was diagnosed with AML yesterday…

Can’t say anything else but please pray for us.

My dad is scheduled for his chemo next week.

Right now, I’m trying to find inspiring stories to tell my dad so if you know of any, please let me know…

Today, I spent my time calling up friends and relatives for blood.

    HI Jimbob,

I see what you mean by stress levels… wow…

I can’t believe you did all that! hahahah…. and you had so much energy… I think for a normal person like me, I’d faint with everything happening…

I thought I should add that my dad has been experiencing bruises and he has been stressed so i’m just worried – the BMB results don’t come back till Tuesday…

we think it’s related to stress but we’re not certain…

Dear J.Clair, I hope they find more cells too – seems like you are in the same boat as my dad… in fact, looking at the age and that you are RA also, … it looks you and my dad are similar..

Yes, my dad’s doc actually wanted to start my dad on cyclosporin rather than thalidomide initially but because my dad was on TB drugs, he couldn’t take cyclosporin…

I forgot to mention they took my dad off his TB drugs yesterday too …

Hopefully, my dad’s condition will improve… the thing is we don’t even know if there are chromosome abnormalities… the next 5 days will have us holding our breath…
