Well.. we found out where the fever was coming from. After posting this question, I urged my dad to see his dr about it and be upfront with him.

He was hosp. and he was internally bleeding in the lungs. He is on o2 now for a few months with more medical problems.

Thank for all the advice from everyone!

Wendy – thanks for the info. I would like to try thalidomide next.

My dad was on Thalidomide for approx 3 months and his counts were going up. His RBC’s were looking better and also the WBC’s. They were going up!! BUt sad thing was.. the side effects were too much for him. He was hospitalized over Thanksgiving [2004] for side effects. They were bad!

At the same time, many many patiens respond well to Thalidomide. Maybe this is the route to take!!

I hope it all works out for you daughter!! *hugs*

Hi Paige. Just noticed your dad and my dad were dx’ed with MDS same month and same year.

What was wrong with the Vidaza and thalidomide? Side effects too much or blood counts were going up? jUst wondering. What classification of MDS is he?

I didnt know about Compazine, Neil! Thank you. I will mention it to him and get him to ask his hemo.

I remember now.. Zofran was a bit pricey! I used it when I was preg with my son.

How long can Procrit be taken? indefinitely as long as RCB’s are going up. I assume hemo’s look at RCB’s and Hgb’s?

I have heard Amifostine works pretty good. My dad’s hemo considered it. My dad is on Procrit and will be on Vidaza soon.

Being in Houston, likle Suzanne there is a COE at MD Anderson.

    University of Texas
    MD Anderson Cancer Center
    Houston, Texas
    Elihu H. Estey, MD

What is her classification of MDS? what other ways are they treating your daughter?

I know many patients are on Thalidomide, also.

    Best of luck!

    People with MDS..

Can pneumonia be alot harder to fight given the low BC’s?

I am worried about his recovery and certainly dont want him to die.

How many units are you taking, Neil and as well, your mom Julie?

I believe my dad is on 20,000 and I wanna say he was increased to 40,000. That sticks in my mind.

My dad has pain around the injection site, which is his stomach. Just for about a day..

He gets a little nauseated with it. Nothing major and the nausea is tolerable with Reglan. I thought about mentioning to him Zofran for the nausea.

I need to see what the latest RBc’s as of last week.

    TY for the input!

I can’t afford to miss a day right now. I’ve used up all my sick and vacation days already.

that has to be hard. My dad is the same way. he is on the thin ice with his sick days. He stays home when he has too, but at times it effects his income.

He is the breadwinner and still needs to be making money to pay bills. Thats a headache, but at the same time. He cant go to work alot!

I hope your wife gets better!!!
