I just got off the phone with the nurse and she is doing much better today.

Barbara ~ I looked at her antibiotics and they are giving her the one that you mentioned.

She was fever free all night but she is still puffy. We have a meeting with the doctors today at 3 to discuss where we go from here..wish us luck..

Thanks for the info. I will ask them about that when I get there this evening. They were suppose to put in a central line but now they want to wait until the fevers are gone. I just feel so bad for her because she is just so weak right now..you know…and there’s really nothing we can do for her…. frown

Debe ~ From what I have heard about the Fungal Infection it just needs to be treated with a different type of med. My mom-in-law had/has pneumonia and the meds were not working so they check to see if it was fungal. It wasn’t but if it had been then they would need to use something different. I’m not sure about her wbc’s. Someone here may be able to answer that one for you. Hope she gets to feeling better soon!!!

Hi Hilda and welcome to the board. My mom-in-law’s situation sounds about the same as yours. Mom is 68 years old and has had MDS for 3-5 years. We found out at the end of Sept that she transformed into AML. She has been having some pain in her joints and they gave her darvon also. But it got to the point to where it wasn’t helping anymore. She ended up with some major back pain so they gave her some pain meds and that made it a little better. We had to take her to the hosp on 12/23 and they finally did an MRI of her back and stated that she had Celluits. But she has been battling a fever and stuff since the beginning of December. I really don’t know if you could consider the pain as the end stages. Everyone is totally different when it comes to this, which is really crazy.

Kathy ~ I will keep your dad in my prayers. My mom-in-law was like that after her husband passed away. She was just so depressed and didn’t want to do anything or go anywhere. We lived with her at that time and I think it helped having us around. Yeah, you may want to check with his doctor to see if they can give him anything for his depression, just until he can deal with things a little better. The holidays are always the hardest part, you know. Feel free to vent anytime.

Mom is doing better. They now have her on heart meds and blood pressure meds. They still can not keep her temp down. It was up to 101.4 last night so they gave her some tylenol. They will not give her any until her temp reaches 100.5. She broke out in a horrible rash over the weekend. They think it was an reaction from one of the meds that they had her on so they switched that. Then she thought she saw ants on the ground, heard me and my daughter talking, etc. So they had to switch her pain med. But I guess that is one of the the side affects. We still don’t know when she will be getting out but we have Hospice set up and ready for when she does come home. She did tell me the other day that she is ready to go “home”. I really don’t know how much more she will fight.

Well, Just wanted to give you that update from the weekend…Love and prayers to all!

Jim ~ Boy what a way to start off the New Year frown
Like everyone has said, Neil is the person to turn to. He has a list that he gives on what questions to ask. Everyone responds differently to this MDS. My mom-in-law had MDS for about 3-5 years before it transformed into AML. She was doing good but the probablem with her was that she had already had treatment for Breast Cancer 8 years ago (chemo/radiation) and this is how she “got” the MDS. She has opted not to go thru the Chemo/Radiaion again for the AML. I really hope that things go well for your mom. Please keep us posted as to how she is doing.
